My Revised and Finalized Digital Declutter
Internet Use
- 1 Window of Internet Access per Day: 6AM-9AM MON-SUN
- Non-essential internet use outside of this window is completely forbidden!
Some examples of essential internet use:
- Checking my bank account
- Sending money for purposes of bills, repaying a friend, etc
- Internet use required for my dayjob, only allowed on the provided work computer, which has builtin restrictions for accessing non-essential websites
Two exceptions to the rule:
- I am allowed to watch youtube, netflix, etc if it's in a social context among friends/family.
- I am allowed to watch youtube at or later than 9PM, if and only if I am getting ready for bed, as I am accustomed to sleeping with the sound of a TV on.
Usage of streaming services, e.g. netflix, youtube, etc is NOT allowed AT ALL outside of my 6AM-9AM window under any other circumstances.
Videogames
I love videogames, and I love playing them! However, they serve as another component absorbing time away from living my life, so some new rules have been set:
- I can only play videogames during the window of 6PM until 8PM
General Computer Use
I love computers, I love programming, and I love Linux! That's a problem, because I also waste a lot of time just poking around in my computer. While this isn't a bad thing in and of itself, moving forwards my general computing use will be limited to my office, which includes when playing videogames! I do not intend to restrict this to a window of time, rather to a space. If I want to relax in my bed, I can't bring my laptop. It stays in the office. The exception here is my ebook reader, which I can take with me to bed, so that i can read books!
This will probably be my more-or-less permanent plan for the remainder of my life, as it sets clear restrictions and limitations. If some super useful new technology comes along, I will determine whether or not it is precisely beneficial, and if it is, incorporate it cleanly into this plan and update this page here.
