Stream of consciousness posts as I read Moby-Dick, as I remember to
I have not finished…..in the midst of what I will call the “early-week late-morning whaling workshops at the weeklong whaling conference” series of chapters at the moment….the whales feel more human to me than the human characters. Every whale death in this book shakes me to my core. Oh my god the chapter where the pregnant and baby whales chill out next to the boats before getting killed. Horrible.
The scene where the Shaker guy Gabriel stabs a knife through a letter and yeets it back to Ahab goes hard. Wanna do that some day, maybe with an insurance letter of some sort…?
On a related note Shakers are wild man. Can’t believe there’s still two of them left (last I heard of them, maybe none/more now?)
picking the whale back up, starting with Stubb’s request for the rawest meat. Thinking of Tim Robinson and his trademark Sloppy Steaks….Stubb’s Sloppy Steaks
I have been reading Moby Dick and am about halfway through but unfortunately have not thought to post about it. It’s still great. I’m still having a good time. Some of it is in a sleepy daze but I want to continue reading it until the baby is born.
Does make me wish I had an education that emphasized the classics a tiny bit more, a lot of the references are over my head unfortunately.
Starbuck is my favorite, the one normal guy in the midst of insanity
I’m really burning through this book, almost halfway already. Meeting Fedallah for the first time. Hair inspo.
Melville does the “tolerating the crazy guy until he’s just too annoying to ignore” thing masterfully lol Morning to ye! Morning to ye!
They’re on the boat and have left Nantucket, forgot that this took 21 chapters.
“We must have Hedgehog there, I mean Quahog, in one of our boats.” Classic zinger!
Crazy how much foreshadowing there is, literally death everywhere.
Nantucket as described is so funny to juxtapose with Nantucket as it exists (in my mind, I have never been)….imagining Alan Dershowitz sailing the seven seas
