there are plenty of graphemes that use more than one codepoint. flags are one example, but there are plenty of others.

restricting that field to one codepoint makes a ton of these unusable.

That is true.

However, I'll need to consider if the complexity of implementing this is really worth the trouble, given that there are plentiful good icons available as single code points. This change would be reflected in many places in the code.
