Designing and building sociotechnical systems, while keeping things small and simple:

why

Over engineering can be a necessary part of building, to err on the side of caution by providing slightly more tolerance than required. In software development the practice has taken on a new guise, in which teams build solutions entirely inappropriate for their intended purpose. 99.999999% of companies requiring software are not hyperscalers, with billions of concurrent global users, and yet the norm has become to copy their practices. Leading to immense complexity, delayed projects, and solutions that are typically less robust than ones drastically simpler. Any source of complexity has compounding effects, lets work on solving the issues we actually need to solve. We believe in building simple.

8by3 was founded in 2025, although its members have all been working in technology for over 20 years.

Whilst we are a remote first organization, we are legally situated in the UK and 8by3 LTD. is a UK registered company.

how

We love open source tools and the communities that build them. Every part of our business runs on such software, and it's not surprising that we design solutions leveraging these same tools for our clients. While a simple approach, is a pragmatic one. There are few times when diverging from this approach is worthwhile. The primary exception is when interacting in highly regulated spaces in which third parties offer reliable services, e.g. payments, something you really don't want to be doing yourself, unless that's really your business.
